The Entrepreneurs Foundation of the Capital Region (“EFCR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging emerging growth companies to support our local community. We seek to engage entrepreneurs and their companies in philanthropy early on in their companies' paths to success, helping them to establish a culture of awareness and giving, while positively impacting the economic vitality of our region.
We believe that the Capital Region’s entrepreneurial visionaries, who have the courage and foresight to start new ventures, are exactly the kind of people who will most want to give something back to their communities…and are among those with the most energy and creativity to give. EFCR assists these leaders in establishing community development programs within their growth companies by providing a virtual "staff" member who focuses on developing a community involvement program. EFCR works with member companies to identify community projects and programs and helps facilitate activities under the guidance of each company’s senior management team. Joining EFCR gives companies a chance to contribute to the community while enhancing the company's team building, recruiting, retention and morale.
In exchange for these services, EFCR asks that each member company provide a small donation of equity. Seventy-five percent of any future proceeds resulting from the sale of this equity will be placed in a donor-advised charitable fund and will provide resources for corporate giving at the discretion of the donor company’s management. The balance of twenty-five percent will help to fund the ongoing operation of EFCR.
EFCR is founded on a proven model. In 1998 the Entrepreneurs Foundation of the Bay Area (“EFBA”) was launched by leading venture capital firms Mayfield, Kleiner, Perkins and Sequoia. Since then, EFBA has signed up over 90 companies, liquidated stock worth more than $10 million, assisted a number of innovative non-profits, and engaged over 6000 employees in community involvement programs.
